What Happens During a Newborn Photography Session?
A newborn photography session begins before you arrive: we discuss the portraits you want, styling and who will be included. At the studio, the photographs may combine baby-focused images with parent and family portraits. Afterwards, you choose your finished images through a separate viewing and ordering process.
Knowing that sequence makes preparation easier. You do not need to arrive with props, a list of poses or a baby who behaves according to a schedule. You need a clear plan, the everyday things your family uses and room to communicate what you need.

Before the appointment: decide what matters most
Our consultation covers wardrobe, props, styling and the photographs you hope to create. Start by looking through the newborn portfolio. Notice whether you are drawn to simple baby portraits, softly styled setups, black and white, or photographs of your family together.
Tell me who will attend and which combinations are important. A photograph with both parents is a different priority from an individual parent portrait or an image with siblings. A short, clear list helps us plan without promising every possible combination.
You will also receive preparation information. Discuss any access needs, recovery considerations or practical concerns before the visit. The appointment should fit your family, rather than require you to ignore how you are feeling.
What to bring, and what the studio provides
The studio has newborn props and accessories, as well as wardrobe options for mothers. We will discuss the available choices and what is appropriate for your booking. Bring clothing for partners and siblings, following the coordination guidance we agree on.
Pack the ordinary essentials you use when leaving home with your baby: changing supplies, spare clothing and whatever you normally need for feeding. Ask before bringing a special prop so we can consider whether it belongs in the session. You do not need to buy decorative items simply because you have seen them in another gallery.
A change of clothing for an adult can be useful, too. Prepare the family outfits ahead of time so the morning is not spent searching for a missing shirt or accessory.
At the studio: a plan, not a performance
We begin with the agreed direction and work through the photographs that are suitable on the day. The number and sequence of setups should not be treated as more important than your baby being comfortable. No particular expression, sleeping pattern or pose can be guaranteed.
Let me know when your baby needs feeding, changing or a pause. There is no need to make a baby perform for the camera, and you should not feel expected to delay everyday care for a photograph. Follow your usual care guidance and raise any concerns with your healthcare professional.
When hair and makeup are part of your selected experience, their timing is coordinated with the photography. Confirm the full appointment length rather than assuming the time behind the camera is the entire visit. I guide the adults in their portraits; no posing experience is required.
Including parents and siblings thoughtfully
Tell me your children’s ages and what helps them feel at ease. We can discuss their involvement, clothing and practical arrangements in advance. A sibling portrait should be planned around the children actually attending, not around an image of somebody else’s family.
For adults, choose clothing that feels comfortable and works with the agreed palette. You do not have to dress identically. An uncomplicated top or dress can leave the attention on the connection between you and your baby.

Afterwards: selecting images and understanding the investment
The newborn experience includes a personalized image reveal and ordering appointment, in the studio or through Zoom. This is where we review the portraits, choose your favourites and discuss the images and artwork that suit you.
Before booking, read the current newborn package information and ask what is included in the complete investment. A session fee or portrait credit is not automatically an all-inclusive collection of digital photographs. Confirm the selected images, products and delivery arrangements for your order.
Think about how you will enjoy the photographs. A portrait for a particular wall, a small collection to share with family and digital images may involve different choices. There is no need to decide simply by picking the largest number of files.
Is a studio session the right starting point?
My posed newborn work with studio props takes place in Port Credit. In-home newborn photography is a different, lifestyle approach. Ask about that option when your preference is for photographs in your home rather than expecting a studio setup to be recreated there.
