Maternity Portrait Ideas: Three Looks from Farida's Portfolio
A light gown portrait, textured draping and expressive black and white offer three different starting points for maternity photographs. Compare the feeling of each image before deciding which outfits you need. You may want one consistent direction or a small collection with deliberate contrast.
These examples come from my published maternity portfolio. They are references for a conversation about your own portraits, not a fixed sequence from one client’s session or a promise to recreate an image exactly.

Look one: a light gown and an uncluttered setting
The white gown and light background give this image a restrained colour direction. Rather than using a busy setting to tell the story, the portrait gives attention to the person, the clothing and the way they sit within the frame.
For your own session, ask what attracts you to this example. It might be the pale palette, the neckline, the overall simplicity or the sense of calm. Those are separate decisions: you can like the softness of the image while choosing more coverage or a different kind of garment.
A useful consultation note would be: ‘I like the light, uncomplicated feeling, but I would prefer sleeves.’ That gives us something specific to work with without making another person’s styling a rule.
Look two: draped fabric and visible texture
Here, the fabric and background introduce a different set of visual details. The drape is part of the composition rather than simply an outfit being documented. It offers a way to think about shape, folds and the relationship between clothing and backdrop.
You do not have to arrive with fabric arranged or know how a particular drape is made. The studio wardrobe includes fabrics and styling options that we can discuss during planning. The finished look depends on your preferences, comfort and the pieces available.
Try describing this direction without naming a dress: warm tones, visible texture and a more sculptural feel. That can lead to a personal interpretation rather than a shopping search for an exact match.
Look three: expression and shape in black and white
In this example, the raised arm adds another line to the composition. Without colour competing for attention, the relationship between gesture, silhouette and tone becomes easier to notice.
The useful reference is the feeling of the image, not a requirement to hold the same position. You can enjoy expressive portraiture while choosing gentler movement, a different hand position or a seated approach. Tell me what feels comfortable; direction is part of the experience.
Black and white can also give a collection contrast without requiring every photograph to look dramatic. Consider whether you want one expressive image alongside quieter portraits rather than treating it as a style you must choose for the whole session.
Turn three references into your own direction
Choose the example you are most drawn to and write one sentence explaining why. Then identify one thing you would change to make it yours: coverage, colour, expression, the inclusion of your partner or the overall mood.
We can discuss combining directions, but the number of looks and practical arrangements need to fit your booking. A coherent collection is not the same as fitting every saved inspiration image into one appointment.
Think about the finished photographs, too. Would you like a single statement portrait, a softer group of images or a mixture of individual and family photographs? The answer helps us plan variety with a purpose.
