Cake Smash Theme and Outfit Ideas for First-Birthday Photos
For Cake Smash photographs, start with a small colour palette, one clear visual idea and an outfit your child can move in comfortably. Plan the cake, clothing and backdrop together rather than buying them separately. A first-birthday portrait can feel celebratory without every part of the picture competing for attention.

Choose a feeling before choosing a named theme
Look through the Cake Smash portfolio and save two or three favourites. Describe what you enjoy about them: a quieter palette, a playful setting, a simpler background or the overall sense of celebration.
Those observations are more useful than choosing a theme only because it is popular. You might love a photograph’s simplicity while preferring completely different colours for your own child.
Think about where the photographs will live, too. A portrait for your home may call for a different palette from a birthday invitation. You do not need to match the party decorations unless that connection matters to you.
Three colour directions to bring to your consultation
These are suggested starting points, not fixed sets or a promise that particular props are included. We will confirm the design for your session during planning.
Cream, sage and a botanical direction. Start with a light neutral, add a muted green and discuss whether a small amount of botanical detail suits the look. A simple outfit can connect the colours without copying every element of the backdrop. This is a direction to explore when you prefer an understated celebration.
Soft pink, peach and warm white. Related colours can create a connected palette without making the cake and clothing identical. Choose which element should carry the strongest colour, then allow the others to support it. The idea is a soft, cheerful feel, not a requirement for ruffles, flowers or any particular outfit.
Blue, warm white and one brighter accent. A limited accent can add a more playful note while leaving room for the child to remain the focus. Discuss where that accent belongs: on the cake, in a small part of the set or in an outfit detail. It does not need to appear everywhere.
These palettes are options for any child, not rules based on gender. A favourite family colour or a meaningful personal detail may be a better starting point than any of them.
Let the cake, backdrop and clothing do different jobs
A coordinated set does not mean every element must display the entire theme. The cake can carry a key colour while the outfit stays simple. Or a meaningful outfit can lead the palette while the surrounding details remain quieter.
Choose one main idea, then ask whether each extra detail helps it. Several unrelated motifs, large lettering and a busy outfit can pull attention in different directions. Removing something is a valid design decision; more props do not automatically make the portrait more personal.
The package includes a coordinating six-inch professionally decorated cake. Describe the look you like before placing separate orders, and confirm specific decoration requests with me. You do not need a birthday-party-sized cake for the photograph.
Choose the outfit for movement as well as photographs
Begin with clothes that fit comfortably and do not need constant repositioning. Consider how the outfit works while your child sits, reaches and moves in their usual way, rather than judging it only on a hanger.
A romper, simple dress or coordinated separates can each be a starting point. Match the level of detail to the set: when there is already a strong theme, a quieter outfit can leave room for expressions to stand out. Large logos and competing patterns deserve a second look when the goal is a cohesive portrait.
Studio wardrobe access is included, so ask about available pieces and sizes before buying anything specifically for the session. A personal outfit is also worth discussing, particularly when it has meaning for your family.
Plan a separate clean outfit for the journey home and bring the everyday changing supplies you normally use. Clothing for a cake activity and clothing for afterwards have different jobs.
Want clean birthday portraits or family photographs, too?
Raise those priorities when you inquire. Portraits before the cake, additional outfit changes and parent or sibling participation need to fit the agreed session plan; do not assume they are automatic inclusions.

A clear priority helps us plan. A parent who most wants one family photograph has a different brief from someone who wants the session focused entirely on their child’s birthday set. Neither needs the longest possible list of photographs.
What to send me before buying props or clothing
Send two or three portfolio favourites, a few colours you love and a photograph of any outfit you hope to use. Add one sentence explaining the feeling you want.
For example: ‘We like a simple cream-and-sage direction, would prefer a comfortable romper, and would love the attention to stay on our child’s expressions.’ This is an example brief, not a description of a past client. It gives us something practical to discuss without requiring a finished mood board.
Also mention the birthday, preferred session timing, any image-delivery deadline and cake requirements. Specific requests can then be checked before you spend money on items that may not be needed.
